Verse 1 — The Road You Choose

Life is a journey of choices we make,
With turns in the road and chances at stake,
Some paths lead to peace, while others bring pain,
Some offer sunshine, while others bring rain.
You can choose to be bitter, resentful, and cold,
Or compassionate, gracious, and noble of soul,
For the road you travel reveals who you are,
And your character shines like a guiding star.
When the world tries to drag you through anger and strife,
Always take the high road throughout your life!

Verse 2 — Don't Stoop to Their Level

When someone insults you to wound your pride,
And throws out cruel words with a sneer on the side,
When they try to provoke you and make you explode,
Remember the wisdom of choosing your road.
You need not respond to each insult they fling,
Nor answer each taunt with a venomous sting,
For revenge is a fire that consumes what it feeds,
And hatred will flourish wherever it breeds.
Don't become what you hate in the heat of the fight;
Take the high road and walk toward the light!

Verse 3 — Rise Above Gossip and Lies

When others spread rumors and twist what is true,
Inventing dark stories to discredit you,
When whispers are traded and falsehoods take flight,
And your name is dragged through the mud out of spite,
Don't answer their gossip with gossip of your own,
Or plant seeds of malice wherever you've gone.
Let truth be your anchor, let patience prevail,
For lies may run swiftly, but truth leaves a trail.
Speak up when it's needed, defend what is right,
But never let slander extinguish your light!

Learn to be Nice

In a world that is moving at frantic delight,
Where the noise of the day often swallowed the night,
There is power in calmness, a grace in the spirit,
A melody soft if we pause just to hear it.
To walk through the earth with a gentle embrace
Is to bring an abundance of light to each place.
It starts with a decision, a choice that we make:
To give for the joy, not the gain we can take.
To blossom in beauty, to rise and suffice,
Is to walk down the path where we learn to be nice.

To care for another is where it begins,
A heart that is open where empathy wins.
When a neighbor is hurting or feeling alone,
We offer a shoulder, a warm gentle tone.
We step from the shelter of self-interested thought
To cherish the lessons that kindness has taught.
A helpful hand offered without a command,
To hold and to lift, and to help others stand.
In small acts of service, true virtue resides,
Where love is the compass that constantly guides.

With courtesy polished and manners refined,
We speak with a soft and accommodating mind.
"Please" and "Thank you" are keys that unlatch heavy doors,
Creating a harmony where peace restores.

In every space, in every night,
Beneath the soft or glaring light,
A simple word stands clear and strong,
To mark the line of right and wrong.
When passion breathes or tempers rise,
Look deeply in a woman’s eyes,
And if she speaks the word of clear intent,
Remember love demands consent.

When she says no, it isn’t play;
It isn’t "maybe" in a way.
It isn't a challenge to persuade,
Nor part of some game to be played.
"No" is a wall, a boundary line,
A declaration firm, divine.
It means to stop, to step away,
And let her carry on her day.

A real man acts with honor, grace,

Introduction

Overconfidence—often termed hubris—is one of the most persistent catalysts for personal, organizational, and historical ruin. While self-assurance fuels ambition, initiative, and leadership, overconfidence distorts reality. It manifests as an ungrounded belief in one's superior capabilities, flawless judgment, or invulnerability to risk. When conviction detaches from competence, blind spots widen, critical feedback is dismissed, and catastrophic miscalculations become nearly inevitable.

Review: Dynamism of Odissi Classical Dance on Display at Mandala Makers Festival

As I contemplated which shows to review this season, I wanted to be sure to see Indian classical dance. When South Asian touring companies come through town I always admire the precision, complexity, and expressiveness of their performances. Luckily, I did not have to wait for an answer, because the eighth Mandala Makers Festival was in full swing, bringing Chicago-based and international multidisciplinary South Asian performing artists to stages across the city.

Mandala South Asian Performing Arts, founded in Chicago by artistic director Pranita Nayar, connects audiences and students with the vibrancy of the performing arts traditions of South Asia. I went to see a night of Odissi classical dance on September 11 at Comrade Chicago. Performances featured Carlito Catalano, Colin Mascarenhas, Sigma Satabdhi, and Arushi Mudgal & Company. Taken as a whole, the evening showcased the depth and range of an art form which, drawing from a tradition that goes back thousands of years to the temples of the state of Odisha, is given continued life and relevance through its contemporary practitioners.

The first performer of the night was Carlito Catalano, who briefly contextualized the work, explaining that the type of dance he would perform, called sthai, brings the poses of temple statues to life through movement. He took the stage in bright orange pants and drew us in with sure footwork, sustained poses, and sweeping floorwork. I was especially impressed by his ability to maintain long balances while simultaneously changing the focus of his eyes. Read more>>

Hidden on the remote, wild northwestern coast of Andros Island lies Red Bays—the only historic human settlement situated on the western shore of the largest island in The Bahamas archipelago. While mainstream North American history often emphasizes freedom seekers traveling north toward Canada, hundreds of enslaved Africans and their Indigenous allies fled south into the Florida Everglades. Guided by courage and marine navigation, they risked a treacherous 150-mile voyage across the Gulf Stream to seek sanctuary in British territory. The community they founded in 1821 at Red Bays remains a living testament to Afro-Seminole resistance, self-determination, and cultural synthesis.
