Double trouble for Discovery Day

By KARAN MINNIS, Guardian Lifestyles Reporter

If you ask a Bahamian, another word for holiday is party. And there's no such thing as a wasted party, and the October 12 holiday weekend will be no exception, with two of The Bahamas' best parties to choose from — two Family Island regattas.

From Friday, Oct. 10 to Tuesday, Oct. 14 the residents of North Eleuthera and Harbour Island will open their doors to all and sundry as over 2,000 people are expected to attend its regatta, while another 1,000 people will be chilling out on the beaches of San Salvador from Friday, Oct. 10 to Sunday, Oct. 12.

CARIFESTA: A Caribbean celebration

By Chakara Bennett | Guardian Summer Intern

Just when you thought the party was about to stop, because the children are just about set to head back to school after the summer break, then something else "jumps off".

This time it's a Caribbean-wide party, so you just have to be there, with the kids in tow, for the 10th annual Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) festivities, Aug. 22-31 in Guyana. It's the region's roving, multi-disciplinary mega arts festival which attracts a wide range of creative artists from various Caribbean and Latin American countries.

This is the perfect opportunity to make up for all those festivals you didn't get to attend earlier in the summer, and give your children a taste of the arts at the same time

Come On Down

Fox-Hillians want you to join them for Emancipation celebrations.

By KARAN MINNIS | Guardian Lifestyles Reporter | karan@nasguard.com

It's that time of year when Bahamians from all walks of life flock to the eastern end of the island for Fox Hill Day, and as usual, it's an affair you don't want to miss out on this Emancipation holiday weekend.

Fox Hill Day, which celebrated every year on the second Tuesday in August, is the oldest one-day celebration in the country. It actually started as a party day for the children of the Baptist churches in the community which wanted to do something for the Sunday school children who did so well in school. But people from the other settlements around the island started going to Fox Hill to join in the festivities, and it just grew into what it is today, an event for Bahamians of all walks of life, according to Eric Wilmott, 74, a Fox-hilian who will be honored at this year's affair.

Now, says Wilmott, Fox Hill Day is not just the day of fun for people of Fox Hill but for all people of The Bahamas.

"Who Dat" ready to race.

By DAHALIA SMITH, NG Sports Reporter, dahalia@nasguard.com

"Who dat say who dat when I say who dat?"

This is the question that Cat Islanders will be asking when their A-class sloop 'Who Dat' represents them at the 52nd Cat Island Regatta set to be held August 1-4 in honor of Wilberforce Seymour.

Seymour is a past president of the Cat Island Regatta Committee. According to the current President Maxwell Burrows, he expects this year's major regatta to be the best ever. The A, B and C-class sailors will be handsomely rewarded as fashion tycoon and former Olympian Peter Nygard pledged $15,000 toward the cash prizes. In addition, the cash pot increased an extra $3,000, as Joseph Dogeandanovich donated this amount toward the first A-class cup race at a press conference held at Sailor's Choice Millennium Countdown.

Sammy T's throwing a Cat Island bash

By Chakara Bennett, Guardian Summer Intern

The Cat Island Regatta, and Sammy T's Beach Resort's 5th Anniversary bash, coupled with the summer heat will make Cat Island one of the hottest places to be when August rolls around.

And heating up the anniversary celebrations will be world renowned jazz musician and singer, Cynthia Strachan-Saunders, who will be performing a live concert at the resort.

"This should be very exciting and different for our guests and locals who may come," said Angela Brown, the resort's day cook. "Cynthia is amazing and her voice is incredible. I would compare her range and quality to Celine Dion's maybe — but she sings jazz songs though. She always blows me away.

Andros is the place to be

By KARAN MINNIS, Guardian Lifestyles Reporter, karan@nasguard.com

When most people think of Andros the words Crab Fest usually come to mind, but just as much fun as you had at Crab Fest, you can have at the upcoming All- Andros and Berry Islands Regatta in Morgan's Bluff, North Andros, over the Independence Day holiday weekend, July 10-12

The food stalls were completely renovated in readiness for the 15th annual event, according to Danny Ferguson of the Nassau committee who was actively engaged in final preparations.

"This is our committee's second year of planning the regatta, and we're excited to be staging a bigger and better event, and we invite all Androsians, people from Berry Islands, and indeed all Bahamians to support the regatta which means so much to the economic well-being of those communities."

Junkanoo in July?

By Chakara Bennett, Guardian Summer Intern

June came, and almost went before word came from the Ministry of Tourism and Aviation that the annual Junkanoo in June celebrations had been pushed back to July, and was renamed Junkanoo Summer Festival, putting the minds of Bahamians at ease, because they finally had a definitive answer about something to get excited about.

With the move from June to July, the festival will avoid the heavy rains of June and should avoid any washouts, and take the shape of a music and heritage festival from July 12 to August 2, at Arawak Cay every Saturday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., celebrating the roots of Bahamian cultural activities.

"Those attending Junkanoo Summer Festival this year will notice a marked, down-home flavor to all the festivities," said Janet Johnson, director of Product and Events Strategy in the Ministry of Tourism and Aviation. "There will be lots of music, and we have made a concerted effort to provide an acoustic sound. While the electronic enhancements of rake 'n scrape are still popular, our visitors and residents will have a unique experience this summer, listening to the natural sounds of the saw, the scrubbing board, the tin tub, and the goatskin drum."
