Carifesta X Call for Artists and Filmmakers

Dear Bahamian Visual Artists and Filmmakers:

The National Art Gallery is preparing the Bahamian Visual Arts presentation for CARIFESTA X in Georgetown, Guyana (August 22-31, 2008)

In order to:

1. Highlight the work of as many Bahamian artists as possible,

2. Avoid the expense of packing and shipping work,

3. Avoid the risk of an unknown exhibition space and the lack of insurance on the works in country,

The NAGB has chosen to produce a digital presentation of Bahamian Art.

To that end, the Gallery requests that all artists interested in having their work presented at Carifesta X produce a Power Point slide presentation of 15 to 20 images and deliver it to the NAGB Attn: Erica M. James, Director no later than Thursday, July 31 at 4pm.

The CD should include an opening slide with an image of the artist including his or her name and contacts, followed by images of work. The slides may include details on the work such as its name, media, dimensions and the artists’ name.

Filmmakers should submit DVD copies of their work for inclusion in the festival screening.

Along with submissions, Artists and Filmmakers are asked to submit a one page artist statement and exhibition CV.

This is a wonderful opportunity for Artists to share their work with a wider Caribbean audience in anticipation of the Bahamas' hosting of Carifesta XI in 2010.

If you need help with this request, please contact Jackson Petit (email: jacksonpetit@gmail.com) or Holly Parotti (email: hparotti@nagb.org.bs) at the NAGB.

Please email additional questions to emjames@nagb.org.bs or walklikeagiant@gmail.com

Sincerely,
Erica M. James

Click Bahamas Photography Show - Fri. May 23

The Ladder Gallery at NPCC on Blake Road
is pleased to host the photography exhibition of
CLICK BAHAMAS
in a three week show
Opening this Friday, May 23, 2008 at 7 pm.

CLICK BAHAMAS is an online FaceBook group for avid photographers to share their images, ideas and techniques. "I heard about a new group forming and asked Elena DeSouza, one of the founding members, if she would be interested in putting a show together," said Gillian Watson, curator at the Ladder Gallery. "Together we came up with the unique concept of creating a show based on a peer online voting process." The rules were simple. Upload your favorite images, place them into one of seven categories and then vote for your favorite images. All of the communication for the entire show took place on line. Entrants were given a certain deadline for images to be entered and voting took place over the course of a weekend. Of the nearly 500 images on the group page more than 50 were chosen for this show. "It seems to me to be a really democratic way of creating a show. This really is for the people, by the people," said Mrs Watson. "I'm quite excited to see what it is like when these people are all together in the same room. The show opens on Friday night at 7pm and all are invited to meet the photographers and see their work. For more information on CLICK BAHAMAS join their group on FaceBook. For more information on the Ladder Gallery email gillian@npcconline.org.

Exuma's the place to be

By KARAN MINNIS, Guardian Lifestyles Reporter, karan@nasguard.com

It's time to make plans to travel to Exuma! The 55th National Family Island Regatta and Homecoming, the grandest in the country, will be staged Tuesday, Apr. 22 to Saturday, Apr. 26 in George Town, Exuma, and thousands of Bahamians and visitors alike are expected to descend on the island.

While it will be one of the biggest parties in the country this year, the event is the highlight of the regatta season as native sloops compete for bragging rights on the waters in Elizabeth Harbour. The competition is always fierce and the atmosphere is alive with excitement, according to regatta coordinator Danny Strachan, who said that in addition to the races there are a number of other events taking place which will ensure that there's something for everyone.

From a church service, to an arts exhibition, to the skipper's party, cultural show, beauty pageant, fashion show, Junkanoo rush-out, domino tournament, and with performances by the Exuma Police Youth Band, and the Royal Bahamas Police Force Marching Band, there is definitely something for you.

Since the first race held in April 1954, the National Family Island Regatta has grown in size and popularity. Today, although the race remains the main attraction, visitors are invited to participate in the countless onshore activities.

Executive producer and franchise owner Gaynell Stubbs says that the registration process in the search for this unique young lady is underway, and anyone who thinks they have what it takes — beauty and brains — to represent The Bahamas on the world stage should sign up for the event.

Prospective contestants must be Bahamian women aged 18-26, single, have never given birth, be of good moral character and have the desire to be crowned Miss Universe 2008, according to the pageant's rules.

Women fitting the above criteria can register online at www.missbahamas.org or call the organization at 364-3472. And must do so quickly, as the deadline of Thursday, Jan. 10 is fast approaching.

C.R. Walker "not surprised" about Jr. Junkanoo win

By KRYSTEL ROLLE, Guardian Staff Reporter, krystel@nasguard.com -

The coordinator of C.R. Walker's Senior High School Junkanoo program told The Guardian yesterday that he was not surprised when he learned that they had won the annual Junior Junkanoo parade. In fact, Oscar Dames added that he would have been more shocked if they had lost.

"It wasn't a surprise," he said. "We were prepared, we had everything in place and we know what it takes to win. We just won last year, so it was an easy win. The students were excited because they knew they had it," he said.

It was a sentiment that was reflected among most of the participants when The Guardian visited the school yesterday after the results of the parade were released shortly before 1 p.m.

With 3,223 points, C.R. Walker captured the senior high division, also winning Best Banner and Best Dance. The Best Music Award went to the second place finishers, Grand Bahama's Sir Jack Hayward High who racked up in 3,170 points.

C.C. Sweeting placed third with 2,710 points and Harbour Island All-age School placed fourth with 2,694 points. North Andros High School placed fifth with 2,476 points.

But the C.R. Walker Knights were not the only winners of the night.

In the Primary School division, Grand Bahama's Walter Parker Primary won Best Banner, Best Music and Best overall group, bringing in a total of 3,444 points. That was the highest score recorded in all divisions including the Senior High School division.

St. Thomas More Primary placed a close second with 3,173 points. Woodcock Primary got 2,784 points to hold down third place and Thelma Gibson placed fourth with 2,759 points.

Revere Academy brought in 2,480 points and Reality Edu-Care and Albury Sales scored 1,874 and 1,048 points respectively.

A.F. Adderley, the only Jr. High School to compete, won with 1,678 points. The group did not score as high as they could have because the school did not have a banner.

One-on-One emerged as the winner of the pre-school category with 1,124 points, with Aunt Jenny's placing second with 978 points.

The section leader of C.R. Walker's choreographed section, Dereka Ferguson, said she knew they had won since they started pasting their costumes in September.

"I wasn't surprised at all. We just had fun and the crowd was very into it," she said.

When asked whether she had gotten a chance to see any of the other competing groups Dereka said she did not need to see them, as she knew they would be no competition for her school.

"I mean it was nice for them to come to participate but I really didn't care to see them. We knew we would win because we put in a lot of work."

Daphny Petitfrere, who was the co-captian of the Flagets said she wasn't shocked either.

"Basically the flagets led the whole crowd. We started learning the routine in September and we were done by the end of October," she said, adding that they had a flawless routine.

Meanwhile, Oscar Dames said they started preparing for the parade in the summer and by September they had already worked out their theme and had all the basic patterns cut out.

"When school opened we started to actually build the costumes. We have students who could build and paste. They are well skilled," he said as they were storing the costumes for later use.

The parade began shortly after 6 p.m. on Thursday night and finished sometime after 3 a.m.
