Show your Bahamian pride today

By Chakara Bennett, Guardian Summer Intern

If you see a man walking wearing a cool aqua shirt, blazing gold pants, and a deep black hat shaking some cowbells, singing really off-key and doing a shuffle with a smile caked on his face and there is no sign of a Junkanoo group practicing in the vicinity, chances are, he is either crazy, or he may just be that excited because of what today is. So don't be alarmed when you see a plethora of people in patriotically colored clothing walking around in droves or into your office today!

Rather, I urge you to join him and show your colors! Wave your flag! Lift your head high because today is National Pride Day, and Independence is right around the corner.

And as usual the week before that grand day we show ourselves right off and act like no one ever knew we were Bahamians before today because it is almost that time of year again when Nassau is a sea of aquamarine, gold and black.

Bahamas Safety NET Kids

Glenn Olson - Instructor

Island Jujutsu and Karate located on Carmichael Road has partnered with Safety NET Kids in the US to put on seminars called Bahamas Safety NET Kids. This seminar to be held on Saturday June 14, 2008, is geared to bought parents and kids and will provide strategies on how to prevent abduction, molestation, and being home alone.

The Safety NET Kids child safety programs are the only child safety videos endorsed by Code Amber, child psychologists, law enforcement and child safety advocates from all over America!

It is the mission of Safety N.E.T. Kids www.safetynetkids.com to raise the level of awareness in the three largest threats facing children today, that of child sexual abuse and abduction (child safety), bullying and childhood obesity. To accomplish this large mission children need continuing education and physical response practice. The Safety N.E.T. Program offers exactly this.

The Safety N.E.T. Kids System

1. The Safety N.E.T. Kids DVD and curriculum work together to make for an exciting learning experience.
2. Children watch a portion of the Safety N.E.T. Kids DVD, the program is paused and children take part in the physical response practice.
3. When children are finished with the course, the Safety N.E.T. Kids DVD's are made available to them which further reinforces the lessons taught.
4. The Safety N.E.T Kids DVDs are available at wholesale cost to Safety N.E.T Kids Instructors

Special guest instructor will Glenn Olson founder of the Kids Safety NET Program.(Photo Attached) Olson is a 6 th Degree Black Belt and currently has a Martial Arts Center in Johnson City, Tennessee where he teaches full time, over 200 students and is active in his community teaching child safety through the Safety Net Kids Program. Glenn realized early on that children needed the valuable information provided in the Safety Net Kids program. As a martial arts instructor, Glenn teaches children and adults how to handle all types of confrontations both mental and physical. What confrontation could be more important than that of preventing sexual abuse and child abductions?

The cost of the seminar is $50 which includes a Safety NET T-Shirt, Safety NET DVD, Workbook and Certificate of Participation. There will be four sessions begining at 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm. For more information contact 361-7647 or email info@islandjujutsu.com for more information. All are invited to attend these very informative working sessions,

Bahamas team play to win at Rugby World Cup Caribbean Qualification in Cayman

Bowl Semi Final: Bahamas 19-12 Jamaica

Three impressive penalties by Brian Baker helped the Bahamas secure a place in the Bowl Final against Mexico at the weekend.

In hot and humid conditions at the South Sound Rugby Ground Jamaica started the stronger with a try by Donald Walters. Captain Andrew Fong coverted for a 7-0 lead but Bahamas scrum half Kevin Salabie pulled the scores level after scoring from a charge down and converting.

Salabie added one penalty and Baker a long-range second to give the Bahamas a 13-7 lead at half time. Kevin Howard brought Jamaica within a point of Bahamas with a try after the break but Baker slotted a couple of late kicks at goal to earn Bahamas a deserved 19-12 victory.

Coastal Awareness clean up makes an impact

By STAFF WRITER, Nassau Guardian

Hundreds of local volunteers from all walks of life recently participated in the National Coastal Awareness Beach Clean Up to clear Yamacraw Beach of an overwhelming amount of trash.

The volunteers teamed-up at Yamacraw Beach behind Stoke's Cabana to clear the coast of 21,007 items of debris.

"During Coastal Awareness Month we are holding a number of events such as the beach clean and the harbor clean up that took place recently to educate the public about littering," said Jared Dillet, of the Department of Marine Resources and Chair of the National Coastal Awareness Beach Clean Up Committee. "We hope that by shedding light on the amount of debris we found and educating the public about the severe negative effects it causes to our environment, our health, and our livelihoods, it will create change."

The Coastal Awareness Committee of The Bahamas, a group of stake holders from the private and public sectors with an interest in promoting the sustainable development of The Bahamas, hosted the clean-up as part of their month-long activities designed to educate the public about the importance of preserving our coast.

After hours cleaning-up the beach, volunteers sorted their refuse by type and wrote down their findings on detailed data cards which will be submitted to the Ocean Conservancy by Dolphin Encounters Project B.E.A.C.H. to help them continue to track common types of litter and try to prevent these items from ending up on our beaches in the future.

Drumbeat of The Bahamas

Music from beef kegs and lard barrels

Originally published WELCOME BAHAMAS - NASSAU, CABLE BEACH & PARADISE ISLAND - 2005 © Etienne Dupuch Jr Publications Ltd

The drumbeat is the essence and the soul of Bahamian culture. And the drum sets the heartbeat for all Bahamian music, including rake 'n scrape, Junkanoo and goombay.

Edmund Moxey, musician, historian, teacher, son of the late legend George "God Bless" Moxey, explains:

"The fundamental root of music is the drum. And the original goombay music, which dates back more than 120 years, was actually a marriage of African instruments and the accordion from Europe. The African instruments included the drum, with an animal skin stretched over a hollowed log.

The search is on for Miss Bahamas Universe

By KARAN MINNIS, Guardian Staff Reporter, karan@nasguard.com -

Calling all single, young and talented Bahamian ladies. The country's premier beauty pageant franchise, The Miss Bahamas Universe Organization, has started its nation-wide search for the young lady who will be crowned the 2008 Miss Bahamas Universe.

Executive producer and franchise owner Gaynell Stubbs says that the registration process in the search for this unique young lady is underway, and anyone who thinks they have what it takes — beauty and brains — to represent The Bahamas on the world stage should sign up for the event.

Prospective contestants must be Bahamian women aged 18-26, single, have never given birth, be of good moral character and have the desire to be crowned Miss Universe 2008, according to the pageant's rules.

Women fitting the above criteria can register online at www.missbahamas.org or call the organization at 364-3472. And must do so quickly, as the deadline of Thursday, Jan. 10 is fast approaching.

Under the theme "Seven years of Gratitude and splendor", this year's pageant will commemorate the organization's seven years of production, and Stubbs promises that this year's event will be the best to date.
