Carifesta X Call for Artists and Filmmakers

Dear Bahamian Visual Artists and Filmmakers:

The National Art Gallery is preparing the Bahamian Visual Arts presentation for CARIFESTA X in Georgetown, Guyana (August 22-31, 2008)

In order to:

1. Highlight the work of as many Bahamian artists as possible,

2. Avoid the expense of packing and shipping work,

3. Avoid the risk of an unknown exhibition space and the lack of insurance on the works in country,

The NAGB has chosen to produce a digital presentation of Bahamian Art.

To that end, the Gallery requests that all artists interested in having their work presented at Carifesta X produce a Power Point slide presentation of 15 to 20 images and deliver it to the NAGB Attn: Erica M. James, Director no later than Thursday, July 31 at 4pm.

The CD should include an opening slide with an image of the artist including his or her name and contacts, followed by images of work. The slides may include details on the work such as its name, media, dimensions and the artists’ name.

Filmmakers should submit DVD copies of their work for inclusion in the festival screening.

Along with submissions, Artists and Filmmakers are asked to submit a one page artist statement and exhibition CV.

This is a wonderful opportunity for Artists to share their work with a wider Caribbean audience in anticipation of the Bahamas' hosting of Carifesta XI in 2010.

If you need help with this request, please contact Jackson Petit (email: jacksonpetit@gmail.com) or Holly Parotti (email: hparotti@nagb.org.bs) at the NAGB.

Please email additional questions to emjames@nagb.org.bs or walklikeagiant@gmail.com

Sincerely,
Erica M. James

Kafe Kalik - Seeking Artwork to Purchase

Dear Artists,

Our client, Kafe Kalik Restaurant, will be opening its fourth location on International Drive in Orlando in August. This restaurant will be a high-end restaurant featuring Bahamian food, culture and artwork and attracting a considerable amount of international customers from around the world.

The owners have charged us with the task to search for quality artwork that will set the decor and theme of the restaurant. They are specifically seeking to purchase paintings, sculpture and ceramics incorporating Junkanoo themes and imagery. The restaurant has generous spaces so large-sized pieces will definitely be considered.

If you possess any paintings, sculpture and ceramics which are available for purchase that fits these specifications, kindly call or email me at your very earliest opportunity as our time frame is very tight to source, purchase, pack, ship to Orlando and install before the opening date.

To save on time and expense, we would very much like to view potential artwork by email (if possible) before we take a look at the work in person to determine if it will be in keeping with the owners' wishes for artwork. Please send photos by email ASAP to: dionne@smith-benjamin.com.

It is imperative you include the following information with the photos:

1. Title of Piece(s),
2. Dimensions of Piece(s),
3. Medium of Piece(s) and
4. Cost of Piece(s).

We encourage all artists to consider this offer as your artwork will be showcased in a high-traffic venue in a cosmopolitan city. Your name and contact information will be included on a label beside the artwork in the event a customer sees your work in the restaurant and wishes to purchase more.

We look forward to hearing from you at your very earliest opportunity. Thank you for your consideration.

________________________________________

UPDATE

These are answers to some questions asked by artists who have responded:

1. Type of Artwork: We are seeking artwork with JUNKANOO imagery. The restaurant is a JUNKANOO-themed restaurant and therefore the client is looking for pieces that clearly depict JUNKANOO or its essence - realistic or abstracted.

2. Abstract: Junkanoo imagery does not have to be literal. We will consider abstract work; but it should clearly communicate the essence of Junkanoo.

3. Photography will also be considered.

4. Deadlines: We will be reviewing submissions beginning now until July 18th, 2008. The deadline for us to receive accepted work will be Friday, July 25th. July 18th is our cutoff time as there is much work to be done after all work has been decided upon and purchased.

5. Cost of Artwork: Because of the number of pieces we require and the budget we are working with, cost is a determining factor whether we will be able to acquire a piece or not.

If you have any questions whatsoever, please do not hesitate to email or call; we will be happy to accommodate your questions.

Looking forward to hearing from you and seeing your work.

E. Clement Bethel National Arts Festival Moments

By JACKSON BURNSIDE, For the Guardian

"As one of the first Bahamian artists, Maxwell is perhaps our most advanced. He is a stubbornly individualist artist that has followed his own vision, disregarding the commercial aspects of art that could have made his life so comfortable." These are the words that the late Brent Malone, a close friend and fellow artist, used in introducing Max Taylor at the opening of a one-man exhibition at Brent's Matinee Gallery, on Dec. 12, 1978.

After a lifetime of constant search and struggle, Taylor has established an international reputation of excellence, and has earned a celebrated place in a society that had no place for artists when he was born.

Born in 1939 in Grants Town, Taylor, along with Brent Malone and Kendall Hanna, was one of the first apprentices of the fabled Chelsea Pottery in Nassau. When the pottery closed in 1966, Max found his way to New York. This visit was to last approximately 20 years before he moved south to the Carolinas, and traveled extensively in Europe observing the social, economic, and political dynamics of many cultures. This exposure opened doors to the unique and intensely sensitive perception of the world of Maxwell Taylor.

D’Aguilar Art Foundation

The D’Aguilar Family is proud to announce the formation of the D’Aguilar Art Foundation, an organization that will honor the legacy of Bahamian art patron Vincent Y. D’Aguilar. Vincent D’Aguilar was a pioneer Bahamian art collector who supported the development of the visual arts of The Bahamas for over 30 years, by assisting Bahamian artists through the purchase of their art works, and by giving artists encouragement and criticism to take risks in their artistic endeavors.

The goals of the D’Aguilar Art Foundation are as follows:

* To establish a travel grant program to expose young Bahamian artists to original works of art around the world. In this connection, The D’Aguilar Art Foundation will launch its “Global Discovery Program” to provide travel grants to Bahamian art students at the tertiary and post-graduate level. The grant will contribute to the costs of airfare and accommodations, so that young artists have the opportunity to visit museums and galleries abroad. Vincent D’Aguilar believed strongly in the powerful impact of seeing works of art in person. Accordingly, the Foundation hopes to encourage young artists to view a wide spectrum of important art works around the globe.

* To preserve and stabilize the D’Aguilar Art Collection, which presently includes approximately 450 art works by Bahamian artists. The collection will be accessible to art students, scholars, collectors, and other visitors on an appointment basis once the Foundation’s new premises open in December 2008.

* To continue to support Bahamian artists and aspiring artists, by selectively purchasing art works that complement and expand the current D’Aguilar Art Collection.

* To loan art works from the D’Aguilar Collection to suitable art exhibitions and other appropriate venues, especially those that promote the Bahamas and Bahamian artists.

The D’Aguilar Art Foundation will launch its “Global Discovery Program” with a cocktail party and art exhibition at the British Colonial Hilton Hotel from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm on Thursday, June 19th, 2008. The art exhibition continues on the following day from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Tickets priced at $25 will be available at the door or from BIFF (call 356-5939 for information).

“Hidden Treasures from the D’Aguilar Collection”, a selection of 25 private family art works, will be exhibited during the cocktail party. This event will be held in conjunction with the Bahamas International Film Festival (BIFF) as a precursor to the “Big Screen Art Scene” fundraising event, which is being held at Popopstudios Centre for Visual Arts (PCVA) on June 21st, 2008. BIFF will donate part of the proceeds from the Big Screen Art Scene to the D'Aguilar Art Foundation.

For further information, please contact Saskia D'Aguilar, sds.bahamas@yahoo.com, or 357-9263.

Funding The Arts

By THEA RUTHERFORD, Guardian National Correspondent, thea@nasguard.com

When a great artist dies, his influence inevitably lives on. And when the art community mourns, its tears flow into memories that beg for something more inspiring than an epitaph or a statue in his memorial. They beg for continuance, for a way to honor the fallen that mirrors the passion that permeated their lives.

And so it was with the late Brent Malone, a chameleon of an artist who could not be pinned to any one genre, but seemed to rediscover himself as an artist and re-opened the minds of his audience throughout his life.

Malone's death, so much like his life, has inspired an avenue for young artists to follow their dreams of becoming artists who would not have to separate creating art from making a living. Shortly after his memorial service in late February 2004, Malone's family and friends worked with the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas to establish an Artist-in-Residence Program in his honor. The Brent Malone Artist-in-Residence Program would be awarded to a promising Bahamian artist each year, giving the individual the crystalline opportunity to work solely on art.

Call for Entries: Anthurium of Bahamian Creative Work

From: Obediah Michael Smith
Date: March 18, 2008 1:07:08 AM EDT
Subject: Fwd: Anthurium of Bahamian writers

Fellow Bahamian authors, poets, here's an opportunity not to be
missed. I urge you to embrace it. I urge you to submit as quickly as
you can, so the best of all can be included. I for certain would not
wish to miss this opportunity. Feel free to share this with any other
Bahamian poet, author whom you know and we might not, whose work you
consider is exceptional. I am for seeing that as wide a group of us
are represented, especially Bahamian writers, poets whose abilities we
might not as yet be aware of. I wish you all the best. How much nearer
have we come to developing a national literature, one the whole wide
world shall have to pause and take note of? This I expect will be
indicated by this edition of Anthurium, so generously offered to our
community of Bahamian poets and authors. It's time to polish and
submit. It's time to shine.

Obediah.
