What is a conch wave?

Hi Everyone,

We just heard about the conch wave that was observed near Staniel Cay and thought we’d throw in our scientist’s two-cents. Allan Stoner’s conch research group was the first to describe this mass migration phenomenon near Lee Stocking Island in 1988. He acknowledges that this unusual sight is something the fishermen have probably known about for a very long time. Dr. Stoner and his team observed 25 conch waves over a 6 year period in late 80’s – early 90’s. Short of asking the conch participating in the march, they tried just about everything to figure out what was going on!

So, we thought we’d share what they did learn…

* High density migrations of juvenile conch (lots and lots of young conch all stacked up on top of each other) are sometimes called conch waves or conch walls and can occur throughout the year, but occur predominately October – April. These aggregations can last for months.

* The conch waves are made up of juvenile conch aged 1 year and older (the teenagers), but did include a few younger adults here and there. The biggest aggregations had over 100,000 individuals.

* Conch waves occured on what are considered to be nursery grounds or shallow water areas less than 5 meters (15 feet).
The direction of the migration seemed to be strongly determined by the direction of ebb or flood tide.

* After a conch wave passes through an area, there is significantly less algae on the seabed. The conch were clearly eating the algae, but they were not eating seagrass.

* Most importantly, and the likely reason for these mass migrations, is that individual juveniles within the conch wave had a much lower probability of being eaten by a predator. So, like fish that school together to avoid predation, the young conch may be looking for safety in numbers.

As an update, Dr. Stoner said that even though the team was in the field regularly after studying the conch waves, sadly they see much after their last observations in 1992. Our recent work in the Exuma Cays found that conch nurseries in the same area have declined by at least one half.

The conch wave is still one of nature’s mysteries. We’re glad to hear they are still being observed in places, but are definitely concerned that this phenomenon is becoming more and more rare. If you see a conch wave, please think about the future of conch in The Bahamas and let them grow up to reproduce.

NAGB Announces New Hours & Free Gallery Day for Bahamians

The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas is pleased to announce that we have extended our hours to allow the Bahamian public and our international visitors more opportunities to engage and experience our wonderful Gallery and the art within.

The NAGB will now be open every Sunday from 12 Noon to 4pm in addition to its normal operating hours of 10 am to 4pm, Tuesdays through Saturdays. The Gallery is closed on Mondays and on Public Holidays. The cost for admission for Adults is $5.00, Students and Senior Citizens (Over 65) is $3.00 and Children are free under 12 years of age.

In addition to the extended hours, the Gallery has now instituted a "Free Gallery Day for Bahamians" to take place one Sunday each month affording Bahamians, specifically, the chance to learn through the visual arts at the NAGB about the diverse artistic history and culture that is their own.

The first "Free Gallery Day for Bahamians" will take place Sunday, February 19th, 2012 in honour of cultural icon and NAGB friend, Jackson L. Burnside III.

Conservation Photography Competition

Conservation themed Photography Contest

Friends of the Environment has launched a conservation themed photography contest for students and adults in Abaco in partnership with the US Embassy. Kicked off during the Wild and Scenic Film Festival tour, FRIENDS built on the film Witness, which looked at the important role that photography can play in conservation.

For the purposes of the competition conservation is defined as:

1. The act of conserving; prevention of injury, decay, waste, or loss; preservation: conservation of wildlife; conservation of human rights.

2. Official supervision of rivers, forests, and other natural resources in order to preserve and protect them through prudent management.

3. A district, river, forest, etc., under such supervision.

4. The careful utilization of a natural resource in order to prevent depletion.

Students and Adults (persons who are 18 and older) are challenged to submit a photo, which can be accompanied by adescriptive sentence, phrase or word that expresses some aspect of conservation in Abaco. Contestants may enter one photo per person and must submit their work to Friends of the Environment in a digital format by March 15th, 2012 along with an entry form to be eligible. Entries must be in a standard digital format (JPEG, PNG, GIF).

All entries will be posted online for electronic voting on Facebook. The top 10 in each category as a result of those votes will be forwarded on to a professional panel of judges recruited by the US Embassy who will select the winners. One winner will be
selected from the Adult and Student category and will be announced at an event on Earth Day, 2012 where their prize will be awarded. Second and third place will also be selected for each category, and will be part of a traveling exhibit of the photographs throughout The Bahamas, including the US Embassy.

Bahamas has a voice in association’s new network for growing market

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 3, 2012)—For Linville Johnson and other members of the NTA Faith-based Tourism Advisory Council, months of planning came to a satisfying conclusion at the association’s recent convention in Las Vegas, where more than 60 experienced tourism professionals gathered for the first-ever Faith-based Tourism Leaders Forum. It was only a beginning, though, Johnson said.

“We explored a variety of opportunities in faith tourism during the forum,” said Johnson, the director of faith-based tourism for the Islands of the Bahamas. “As exciting as the meeting at Convention was, we’re just as enthusiastic about the next phase: the NTA Faith-based Tourism Network.”

The network gives participants an opportunity to continue the productive discussion, said NTA President Lisa Simon, CTP. “Now that we’ve experienced the value of sharing challenges and successes in this market, NTA will explore ways to facilitate further exchanges of ideas and information,” she said. “That can include Webinars, shared research, meetings and events.”

Participants at the forum examined the range of faith-based travel—from youth group service projects to spiritual journeys and fellowship trips. They also discussed the economic rewards of the global market, which is estimated to be US$18 billion per year. The group included NTA members from the United States—from Hawaii to Nebraska to New York—as well as Jordan, Canada, Israel, Turkey, Ireland, Egypt, Kenya and the Islands of the Bahamas.

Johnson looks forward to the future of the network and the market. “We’re seeing a growing number of faith-based groups travel here, and the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism is pleased to team up with NTA to develop and expand this market,” he said. “We expect to see more Caribbean countries participate with the NTA Faith-based Tourism Network.”

With his country’s natural beauty and history of religious freedom and expression, evidenced by the number and variety of churches throughout the islands, Johnson believes the Bahamas are especially inviting to faith travelers.

“We cannot claim that Jesus was born in the islands of the Bahamas, but we can assuredly boast that it is the place where God lives,” he said. “When you experience our country’s beauty; culture and warm, friendly people, then you might agree that God created this paradise to be his home.”

Johnson added that the Islands of the Bahamas encourages people of all faiths and religious backgrounds to visit and share in religious experiences.

The Minister of Health indicated that non-communicable diseases account for 45% of deaths in the Bahamas. Heart disease (non-communicable) is the number one killer of persons in the Bahamas. The Bahamas Heart Association is the educational arm of The Sir Victor Sassoon Heart Foundation. The Bahamas Heart Association comprises of volunteers who provide their time and services to the following goals:

Assist the children in need, in our community with the cost of heart investigations and surgery.

Advises the public through the media of all aspects of heart disease, risk factors and preventative care. Speakers and educational material are available to schools, youth groups, service clubs and other public meetings.

The Bahamas Heart Association has scheduled several events during heart month to create awareness to heart disease and to help persons live heart healthy lifestyles.

The events for heart month are:

February 5th – Church Service at Heritage of Redeeming Love Methodist Church

February 11th – Free CPR Classes at SC McPherson School from 10 am to 2 pm

February 16th – Doctor’s Hospital Lecture at 6 pm, with blood pressure checks from 5 pm. Free.

February 17th – Go red for Women day: Free

February 18th – The 48th Annual Heart Ball

February 23rd – The Annual Health Fair at Town Centre Mall from 9 am – 4 pm. Free.

Heart care recipients raising funds to assist other patients

It’s Heart Month and two young ladies want to invite the general public to take initiative and live heart healthy. More importantly, they want the public to follow their lead and help repair the hearts of children in The Bahamas. Heart disease is the number one killer of persons around the world and in The Bahamas. Heart disease does not discriminate by age, gender, social status or other. As such it can affect individuals, from newborns to senior citizens. What is significant about these two young ladies is that they themselves are heart survivors. They received heart surgeries as infants, thanks to the generosity of The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation and the generous donations of others.

Amber Lightbourne and Hadassah Greene are both 9th graders with high aspirations and dreams. Their parents and The Almighty God keep them focused and grounded: Their parents often remind them of the life they have and how fortunate they both are to be alive. Neither of these two young ladies takes the beautiful gift of life for granted. Nor do they take the kindness given to their parents for granted, when they were babies in need of urgent heart surgeries, without which they could have died. Like many other parents today, when Amber and Hadassah were born with heart defects, their parents did not have the financial resources or tools to assist their precious babies. As such, they needed assistance. Thanks to the generosity of The Heart Foundation children, like Amber and Hadassah, are able to receive heart care.

Third Annual Bahamas Day Aviation Event set for Opa Locka, FL

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (January 31, 2012) – The Third Annual Bahamas Ministry Of Tourism and Aviation (BMOTA) Bahamas Day aviation and cultural event will take place February 25th at Miami Executive Aviation, Opa Locka Executive Airport, Opa Locka Florida, between the hours of 10:00 a.,m-3:00 p.m.

The event is sponsored annually by The Islands Of The Bahamas (TIOTB) to assist pilots who want to fly their aircraft to the islands, but will also be open to members of the public who desire general information on The Bahamas as well as information on charter flights and accommodations.

One of the main objectives of the event is to educate general aviation pilots on the ease of flying to TIOTB and therefore U. S. Customs will provide an eAPIS seminar to help pilots understand eAPIS requirements and how to file on-line. Other seminars for the benefit of pilots flying to The Bahamas will also be featured and The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Bahamian Customs officials will be on hand to answer any additional questions.

Booths at the event will showcase information on accommodations, dining, activities and shopping in The Islands of The Bahamas, as well as general aviation pilot information and equipment.

As at past Bahamas Day events, a smorgasbord of Bahamas culture will be presented including a lunch featuring authentic Bahamian cuisine (past meals have included traditional dishes such as peas n rice and conchfritters ). A fully regaled Bahamas Police Officer will be on hand for picture taking opportunities and the ultimate Bahamian cultural experience of Bahamas Junkanoo will provide the unique, explosive and rhythmic sounds of the island nation.

The Bahamas Day event is one of the major marketing and promotional initiatives of the country’s aviation department, based in Florida under the leadership of Aviation Chief, Greg Rolle. NAGB director bringing new markets for Bahamian art

AS THE new director of the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB), Amanda Coulson plans to stimulate a market for Bahamian art home and abroad. With 20 years of management experience, Ms Coulson said she plans to use her expertise and her networks to expose Bahamian art to the global marketplace.

Prior to her appointment, Ms Coulson and her husband worked in New York and Switzerland co-founding their own contemporary art fairs.

"There are plenty of artists working here already that don't need any further lessons in their artistic practice; it's more a question of developing both a marketplace here at home and teaching them how to market themselves so that they can make a living by their practice," said Ms Coulson.

The Young Bahamian Music Society (TYBMS) is seeking to turn talented Bahamians into competent entrepreneurs capable of launching their own careers in the music industry.

WIth the launch of the "Artist of the Year 2012" programme, aspiring musicians will have the opportunity to get their music recorded, get two free video shoots, as well as the chance to be named the most promising artist of the year.

The programme is open to solo acts, duos, trios or groups representing any established genre or styles of music. Prior to being announced as winners, the 48 selected recording acts will have one song of their choice professionally produced and recorded at the Compass Point Studio.

Starting this month, there will be four artists of the week selected by TYBMS. Of the four artists, one will be selected at the beginning of every month as the artist of that month. A total of 12 acts will get a music video shoot.

At the end of the year, one artist will be chosen as the "Artist of the Year 2012" and will get their extended length album recorded and produced, and will get an additional music video shoot.

Repairing a Broken Heart …..What a Gift: Aaron Pratt’s story

Aaron Pratt is a 9 year old, heart patient. He had heart surgery 6 months after he was born. His grandmother originally noticed that he was having difficulty breathing. Subsequently he was taken to a private doctor for care. Ms. Brown, Aaron’s mother, was told that Aaron appeared to have a heart condition and to prepare to have Aaron admitted to PMH. The doctor also referred Aaron’s case to Dr. Jerome Lightbourne, pediatric cardiologist at PMH. Dr. Lightbourne later told Ms. Brown that Aaron had septal defects; holes in his heart and needed urgent surgery. In fact, Aaron had holes in the upper and lower chambers of his heart; He had both ASD and VSD i.e. atrial and ventricular septal defect. Because of Aaron’s small size he had to be given medication to help him grow before he could have a surgery. Additionally the surgery could not be done locally. So, he would have to have it done abroad. Despite the fact that Ms. Brown was working, she could not afford heart care for Aaron and he was not insured. She needed assistance and trusted The Almighty God to lead the way. Dr. Lightbourne referred Ms. Brown to The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation to obtain support and assistance with Aaron’s surgeries. As such, once Aaron had gained sufficient weight, Ms. Brown took Aaron to Jackson Memorial Hospital. On October 4, 2002, via a lapping and patching method, the septal defects were corrected via open heart surgery. Thanks to the kindness of and arrangements made by The Heart Foundation, Ms. Brown also had somewhere to stay, as she awaited the outcome of her baby’s surgery. At present Aaron is a 3rd grader preparing to write his GLAT exams. He enjoys baseball, yet must be careful due to his heart condition. His mother is a very grateful mother and grandmother who encourages the public to help other children who needs heart care. Ms. Brown says:

“The Heart Foundation assisted. I am very grateful because I did not know where to turn. I am grateful to people for putting up funds, who would not run me down for funds or ask me for any thing back”.

The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation is a non-profit organization that helps to repair the heart of persons in The Bahamas, primarily children. They depend heavily on the generosity of others to repair the hearts of persons, who cannot ordinarily afford heart care. Over 97 % of all funds raised go directly to heart care. At present there are 11 children awaiting heart surgeries, who are depending on The Heart Foundation to raise funds to assist them. As it is only the start of the year, it is anticipated that many more children will need heart care throughout the year and some may need more urgent care.

As the fund raising arm of The Heart Foundation, The Heart Ball Committee hosts two major fund raisers annually: The Annual Heart Ball and The Annual Tea Party & Fashion Show. Additionally the public is encouraged to make donations, purchase ads in The Heart Ball’s booklet, sponsor events and possibly assist in other ways.

The Annual Heart Ball is scheduled to be held on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Sheraton Nassau. Tickets for regular seating is $250 per person. Highlights of the evening include: the presentation of the Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award, an in-house raffle, table prizes and an in-house auction. Additionally, there will be live performances by the SG Band, The Ed Brice Orchestra, and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Dance Band.

"Junkanoo is a national celebration of Bahamian culture that is over 200 years old. Though many visitors to the Bahamas arent aware of this party in the streets, director of Educulture Bahamas, Ltd., Arlene Nash Ferguson shares the history and importance of this tradition in everyday Bahamian life.

Its said that Junkanoo began under British law, when slaves were allowed three days vacation around Christmastime each year. Taking full advantage of this break from hard labor, they reclaimed their humanity through an African festival. Since then, this celebration of life and the peoples endurance has continued and become a mainstay in local culture. Two celebrations take place, one Christmas night and the other New Years morning. Full of energy and vibrant dancing, the costumes worn are a central focus of the festival.

Although the materials used have changed throughout the years, from sponges found on the floors of the ocean to newspaper and tissue, and now, crepe paper, the amount of craft involved has stayed the same. The crepe paper is placed onto cardboard one piece at a time and the costumes are layered with crafty details, making this a year-long preparation. Arlene spreads this important history and heritage to local school students, teaching them about the national pride the Junkanoo celebration instills."

Once again on February 9th this active group of local and international artists present their annual Valentine Art Exhibition at the Rand Nature Centre’s Glory Banks Art Gallery, Freeport Grand Bahama.

Each year the GBAA presents artistic offerings from the Grand Bahama community of professional and emerging artists giving many their first gallery exposure.

Many artists will be in attendance opening night to discuss their work and visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to purchase a lasting gift for their special someone. Bahamas Gymnastics Team Competes In Tampa

Seven gymnasts from Bahamas Star Gymnastics (BSG), one of two Nassau-based clubs, competed in a high-level gymnastics competition in Tampa over the weekend, the club announced. The Tampa Bay Turners Invitational 2012 (TBT) was the second meet of the season for the Bahamas Star team.

Head Coach Alex Mayet reports that the all-girls squad held their own among more than 700 top-notch athletes representing more than 30 gymnastics schools throughout the USA, Costa Rica and the Bahamas competing in Levels 2 through 9. “We are so proud of this team’s performance. They demonstrated elegance, grace, skillful precision and accuracy at this meet. What’s more, we learned a lot from the experience,” said Coach Mayet. The coaching team in attendance concurs that the TBT meet was a rigorous and challenging experience for the BSG athletes who were stacked against competitors that were in most cases competing in their eighth or ninth meet for the season.

Laughing with TAP

SKETCH comedy icons are hard to come by in the Bahamas. If TAP has anything to do with it, and she does, that will not be true for very long.

The on screen persona of Tracey Ann Perpall, TAP, is sassy, sometimes vulgar, forward and above all funny, so say her fans. And there are hundreds of them.

Her video blog is exploding on social media networks, praised for its fresh approach and comedic appeal.

Picture Chelsea Lately, the much loved E! Entertainment late night comedy fix, making out with Saturday Night Live, the sketch comedy standard bearer, Bahamian style. TAP VLogs is something like that.

One of her first and most popular hits on YouTube was "TAP says, Can you tell me how to get to Shaniqua Avenue?". It racked up 63,000 views, and counting.

The popular issue spoofed Sesame Street, highlighting the letter, number and colour of the day, all segues to speak about current affairs issues like the sale of BTC and gambling in the Bahamas.

It also represented the on camera launch of Shaniqua, the promiscuous, outspoken and rowdy hand puppet, and reoccurring guest character.

Shaniqua's moppet characteristic evokes the innocence of childish things, but her societal commentary stands in stark contrast.

New Galapagos

Wearing elaborate and expensive diving equipment, cave diver Brian Kakuk sinks gently below the potentially poisonous hydrogen-sulfide zone of an Abaco blue hole. Below this level, where fresh and salt water meet, darkness closes in and only the beam from his powerful torchlight illuminates the mysteries of a long ago world.

Kakuk has spent innumerable hours in this dark, delicate underwater sphere known as the Sawmill Sink, a blue hole south of Marsh Harbour, where extraordinary discoveries have been made of remarkably intact and diverse animal fossils.

They include specimens of an extinct and previously unknown tortoise; 38 skeletons of Cuban crocodiles; an unknown flightless shorebird; an extinct falcon, Bahamas Caracara; and remains of present-day species, many of which are no longer found on Abaco, including the hutia, a rodent still living on a few cays in the central and southern Bahamas.

After leaving the Ranfurly Home For Children, as a teenager to reunite with his biological mother in New York, former orphan turned relationship expert Chris Kazi Rolle, returns home December 29th, 2011 to host “Straight Talk. No Chaser.” at The Sheraton Hotel Cable Beach, where an all male panel will engage an all female audience in a candid conversation about what is on the hearts and mind of men.

Alongside Leah Rose, Media Personality and Marketing Consultant here in the Bahamas, Kazi will serve as co-host to facilitate this innovative community forum, which will include a diverse group of single and committed Bahamian men, age 25 to 45, in varying stages of life, backgrounds and careers. All around The Bahamas persons are gearing up for the holidays. Whilst this is a time many celebrate the birth of Christ, it is also a time gifts are given to some very special persons in our lives. Often times, one would wish that other saw the inner beauty in the persons we give gifts to or wish we could give a gift to. Well, you now have an opportunity to recognize someone special who has given selflessly of themselves, not because they were asked to, but because they desire to see a better life for others.

Each year The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation offers The Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award at the Annual Heart Ball. This award has been presented since 1968. The Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award was initiated by The Heart Foundation to applaud and give recognition to individuals who have selflessly given of themselves to promote human welfare and dignity, thus making life better for their fellow men.

The most recent winners of The Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award include Mary Profilo (Yellow Bird), Dr. Donald Gerace (Gerace Research Centre), and most recently Lady Camille Barnett. Lady Barnett was recognized for her unselfish work with The AIDS Foundation, The Zonta Club and The PACE Foundation. She, like her predecessors, was chosen from a pool of worthy candidates, to be the winners of this award.

As the year 2012 fast approaches, interested persons are invited to submit a nomination, to be accompanied by a letter or statement explaining why the person recommended should receive the award. Nominations are to be submitted to:

The 2011 Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award will be presented at the 48th Annual Heart Ball scheduled to be held on Saturday, February 18, 2012. This event promises to be an evening of elegance, laughter, fun, prizes, and a hearty good time. Additionally, guests can look forward to an exciting cocktail reception, a tasty meal accompanied by fine wines, and lots of prizes and surprises. There will be fabulous table prizes, raffle prizes and auction items.

The Deadline for nominations is Friday, January 13, 2012.

Wild and Scenic Film Festival Coming to Abaco in 2012!

The internationally acclaimed traveling Wild and Scenic Film Festival will make three stops in Abaco: Marsh Harbour, Hope Town and Treasure Cay. Hosted locally by Friends of the Environment the Film Festival is designed around environmental and adventure films that illustrate the Earth’s beauty, the challenges facing our planet and the work communities are doing to protect the environment. Through these films, Wild & Scenic both informs people about the state of the world and inspires them to take action.

Featured films include “Bag It” a humorous look at combatting the increasing use of plastic in everyday life, “Witness” about the role of photography in conservation, and the “1% story” about innovative corporations and their role in saving the planet. The finale will be “What’s so great about turtles?” the winner of the 2010 Spotlight Abaco student film competition sponsored by Friends of the Environment and Loggerhead Productions. James Boyce, the winner, worked with Director Matthew McCoy to make the short film about the recent ban on turtles. This year there will be a One Minute film competition for youth and a conservation photo contest for adults. Details will be announced at the film festivals.

FRIENDS received a grant to host the Festival based on the concept that people who aren’t interested in other kinds of environmental events may be attracted to watching films on the big screen. Especially as film festivals aren’t often available in Abaco. FRIENDS members will receive a half price entry to the Festival and a raffle ticket, new members who sign up at the film festival will get a free entry and a raffle ticket (family and individual memberships will be available) and there will be full price tickets ($10) for those who choose not to become a FRIENDS member.

The Marsh Harbour film festival will be held at New Vision Ministries from 7 – 9 on Friday, January 6th. There will be a slate of films for grown-ups in the parish hall and a special set of films and activities for kids in the Youth Group’s “Zone Room.”

South Florida Bahamian Association host a series of holiday events.

(November 18, 2011) Fort Lauderdale, FL – National Association of The Bahamas ‘ much anticipated upcoming Christmas party which takes place this year in Hollywood, FL, December 10th. will top of the Association’s holiday events.

The party will feature a full sit down Bahamian Christmas dinner, door prizes, gifts, giveaways, Bahamian music and entertainment. Tickets for this year are currently on sale and are available through NAB Board members or by calling (305) 632-7109 or (305) 439-3129.

The National Association of The Bahamas (NAB) recently hosted its annual Dine N Dash fundraiser event, kicking of the organizations fun-filled holiday social calendar, for Bahamians and friends of The Bahamas in South Florida. Other holiday events hosted by the group this year included Christmas In November an early shopping experience.

NAB’s successful Dine N Dash event this year drew its loyal crowd, who enjoyed a riotous comedic presentation on the bus en route to the three homes where they sumptuously feasted on appetizers, soup and salad and entrée and deserts. The evening ended with calypso and line dancing that was enjoyed by all.

The Association also recently held its Annual Christmas In November Trade Show meeting, which took place this year at Conch Heaven, Bahamian Restaurant (across the street from Miami Dade College). Guests while shopping for unique Bahamian gifts were treated to Bahamian conch fritters, chicken wings and Bahamian punch. Items on sale included Bahamian straw bags, Bahamian designer jewelry, hats, cakes, perfumes, Bahamas Goombay Punch and even peanut and coconut cakes.

The National Association of The Bahamas is in its 18th year as a Bahamian organization for Bahamians and those of Bahamian descent in The South Florida area. The goals of the organization include: Promoting opportunities for the interaction and networking of members; Fostering growth and prosperity of businesses and individuals; Increasing employment opportunities; Enhancing the economic stability of the Bahamian community and encouraging and stimulating private enterprise. At 94 years old Sir Durward might no longer be active in sailing in this country, but today as The Nassau Guardian celebrates it's 167th Anniversary, he is still arguably the greatest sporting legend whoever competed for The Bahamas.

Reminiscing on his time as world-renowned sailing champion for The Bahamas, Sir Durward said that he is grateful for everything that he accomplished, and will continue to show support for the sport that he loves.

Enslaved Africans made up the great majority of transatlantic migrants who were forcibly removed to the Americas from Columbus’ first voyages in the fifteenth century until the nineteenth century.

The Trans-Atlantic slave trade, originating in Africa and ending in the Caribbean and the Americas, remains a sensitive subject for several reasons, including issues of race, morality, ethics, identity, underdevelopment and reparations. Europeans defended the trade mainly for its role in providing renewable plantation labour and stimulating economic growth, best manifested in the phenomenal expansion of mercantilist Britain.

By the eighteenth century the trade had become the “most advantageous and most abundant source of wealth” to participating European nations; which indubitably accounts for its longevity and resilience against the forces of abolition.

Art Nucleus to present the Blue-Green Exhibition, November 25th

Freeport, Grand Bahama Island - The newly-developed artist’s collective, “Art Nucleus ” announces the Blue-Green Exhibition set for Friday, November 25th at L'Utopia. The exhibit will include paintings, installation works, conceptual pieces and video. Artists participating are Jacki Boss, multimedia artist; Susan Moir Mackay, conceptual artist and writer; Omar Smith, conceptual photographer and writer; Patrick Forbes, filmmaker; Del Foxton, handmade paper artist; Ken Heslop, multimedia artist; and Ebony Ferguson, painter.

"The concept we are trying to promote is acceptance and interest in a wider variety of "fine art" from both the community and the artists themselves," said exhibition curator, Jacki Boss. "The artists have integrated various materials into their works, besides traditional paintings on canvas with acrylic or oil, viewers will experience a fusion of mixed media elements including handmade papers, recycled materials, lighting and a medley of unorthodox objects. The artists have also provided a statement with each of their works, explaining their interpretation to the Blue-Green theme. This exhibit is bound to stir conversations of intrigue and inquiry."

Blue-Green Exhibition curator, Jacki Boss of Art Nucleus: "The concept we are trying to promote is acceptance and interest in a wider variety of 'fine art' from both the community and the artists themselves."

The intention behind the Exhibit is to confront and test the participating artists with their ability to meet this challenge by incorporating semantics and personal views into their works, and to encourage the viewing public to be open to and embrace alternative translations. This combined diligence is to initiate the process of understanding the artist’s role in a society, and importance of it.

The Exhibit’s display area is in itself, an “installation” piece; a vertical cave symbolizing a secret place, the mysterious and unexplored part of our unconscious mind. A space for the artist’s to, perhaps, explore new territory within themselves and develop additional skills, or to disclose their aptitude at manipulating normal and everyday perceptions. The symbolism of passing through a cave represents a change of state. All of the artist’s works contained within this “blue-hole”, are to be individually discovered, evaluated and impress upon the viewer, the exciting options to conventional thinking.

Art Nucleus has been created in an effort to integrate a cultural climate on Grand Bahama Island; artists are banding together in the spirit of cooperation, to exchange ideas, share techniques and experience camaraderie with organized activities and events. The Bahama Star

The Bahama Star (9,070 grt, 466 ft. long) was originally built as the Borinquen for Porto Rico Line.

She was rebuilt by Arosa Line in 1954 and renamed Arosa Star for a transatlantic service.

Bought by Eastern Shipping Corporation (Eastern Steamship Lines) in 1959 she sailed as the Bahama Star between Miami and Nassau during most of the 1960s until sold to Western Steamship Co. to become the La Jenelle. She was wrecked in 1970.

The year 2011 marked the 50th anniversary of The Heart Foundation. The Heart Ball Committee put their all into the celebrations earlier this year. However, they have not stopped working to help repair hearts. This group of dedicated workers recently met to plan for their upcoming fund raisers and to jumpstart The Heart Ball. They have been working arduously to make the upcoming Heart Ball a larger success than it has been in the past, primarily because more money is needed, due to the increase in the number of patients needing assistance. Despite the need for more money, amidst hard economic times, The Committee keeps a smile on their face, because they know that the more funds they raise, the more they can reach out to help repair children’s hearts in The Bahamas.

The Heart Ball Committee is the fund-raising arm of The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation, commonly referred to as The Heart Foundation. The Heart Foundation is one of the most respected charitable organizations in the Bahamas. Being a non-profit organization, The Heart Foundation relies heavily on the generosity of others to meet their goals and encourage Bahamians to lend their support.

Established in 1961 by Lady Evelyn Sassoon, as attribute to her husband, The Heart Foundation aims to provide assistance to children in need of heart repair. Almost all of the overhead costs of the Foundation are donated, so benefactors can rest assure that their donations are assisting young patients. Over 97% of each dollar raised goes directly to the aid of the children.

For the past 50 years the Sassoon Heart Foundation has assisted over 4,000 young Bahamians with heart ailments. The Heart Foundation works in partnership with the Bahamas Heart Association to raise awareness of heart disease and what must be done to maintain a heart healthy lifestyle.

Each year, The Heart Ball Committee strives to host at least two fund raising events: The Annual Tea Party & Fashion Show and The Annual heart Ball. The Annual Tea Party and Fashion show jumpstarts the Ball year. It is scheduled to be held on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at Government House. The event promises to be very exciting and entertaining with a hat parade, table decorating contest, in-house raffle, fashion show, fine teas and much, much more.

The Heart Ball is scheduled to be held on February 18, 2012. This grand event promises glitz, glamour, fine foods, great entertainment, prizes and surprises. It’s an event that exceeds the imagination and makes Valentines time something to look forward to. Patrons of all Heart Ball Committee events can be satisfied knowing that their contributions will help to repair a child’s heart, providing future benefits.

Other fundraising activities of The Heart Foundation include the giving of “Go red” dress pins and benefit performances in exchange for a donation. The Heart Foundation accepts gifts, memorial donations and tax-deductible donations. No amount is ever too small. The Foundation invites individuals and organizations to lend their support. Just as heart disease does not discriminate, these events and activities do not discriminate based on age, gender, race, ethnicity or other. All are welcome to participate.

Amos Ferguson, born 1920, was a house painter by profession who began painting when he was a boy. He received a vision from God in a dream; God told him to paint the beauty of His world, celebrate the Bible and nature, and to show off his native Bahamas. Amos has followed God's commands and has been painting prolifically for many years.

Amos Ferguson claims to, “Paint by Faith, Not by Sight.” He does not paint what he sees, but what he dreams. Amos's subjects include Biblical scenes, nature motifs, and scenes of Bahamian life, including the festival Junkanoo. His works are bold and bright, charming and uplifting. Amos's use of color speaks of his lush tropical surroundings in the Bahamas.
