Jackson Burnside dies, aged 62

CELEBRATED artist, architect and cultural icon Jackson Burnside has died in a Florida hospital. He was 62.

Mr Burnside had suffered a brain aneurysm on April 14 and was airlifted to hospital in Florida, where he then suffered a stroke, and fell into a coma for over four weeks.

His wife Pamela and daughters Ebony and Orchid were with him when he died at 10.50am.
Mr Burnside, president of Jackson Burnside Ltd, and founder of Doongalik Art Studios, was the recipient of numerous honours and awards, including the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Citizens Award for the Creative and Performing Arts, and the 2008 Bahamas Home and Builders Lifetime Achievement Award.

Throughout his career he has been actively involved in community and cultural affairs and was a Chairman Emterious and designer of the 'One Family' Junkanoo and Community Organisation Group.
