Bahamas CG Florida Guest of Honor At National Association of Bahamas (NAB) Scholarship Gala
(March 18, 2011) FORT LAUDERDALE, FL - Hundreds of Bahamians, descendants of Bahamians and friends of The Bahamas, were introduced to the new Bahamas Consul General Florida, during the recent National Association of The Bahamas (NAB) Annual “Have a Heart Gala,” which took place at the Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Hotel, South Florida.
Ms. Rhoda Jackson took office as the Bahamas CG Florida in January, and was a guest of honor at the scholarship benefit - an elegant fun filled night of Bahamian cultural entertainment. The evening festivities included a comedic Bahamian skit, by “Banana Woman” a soulful jazz rendition by a Bahamian entertainer from the South Florida community and the rhythmic irresistible sounds of a Junkanoo group regaled in colorful costumes.
Embracing the event’s theme “A Stroll Down Memory Lane,” the guest of honor delivered remarks on the simple yet enjoyable times in The Islands of The Bahamas before the age of technology. The CG’s nostalgic and amusing anecdotes were well received and enjoyed by her fellow countrymen based in South Florida. She also took the opportunity to remind some and inform others of the duties of the Consul General’s Office as well as assistance that is provided to local Bahamians – including the processing of passports.
Other remarks punctuating the night’s entertainment included greetings from Broward County Commissioner, Dale V.C. Holness and a proclamation read on behalf of Mayor Andre D. Pierre, Mayor of the City of North Miami.
In keeping with its theme, “A Stroll Down Memory Lane,” during the evening, homage was paid to old and founding members. Banquet goers were also introduced to one of the scholarship recipients who will be graduating in May of this year.
